Wow! The announcement of Des Linden being at the Frosty 50K/25K in Winston-Salem brought out a deep pool of fast folks.

When I saw Dave Sroka, Dan Hirschman, and Bill Johncock on the race roster, I knew it was going to be faster than last year…but yeah, wow. Even beyond those stellar runners, there were elites and locals who upped the ante for the 25K. After speaking with Esayas Nida (who ran a blazing 1:32:08.72) and learning he came in second overall, I was not shocked to see how very many people ran so, so, so much faster this year than last. Local Emma Spencer ran a sizzling 1:45:40.97. Des Linden came in 3rd Female…which was amazing to me, knowing her running talent…showing the competitiveness of the field.

Aside from the above, I had a personal record and ran the course twelve seconds faster per mile this year over last year. Wo0t! Was worried coming into the race, as glute and hamstring have been sternly speaking up lately…but overall, the run went without commentary from the aforementioned. Perhaps the hill training “primed the pumps” (so to speak)…? Totally glad I switched to the 25K, as my pace had dropped a tad in the second half…not sure what that would have meant for the 50K. Congratulations to Kevin McCabe, who ran the 50K at a pace almost identical to my 25K pace…!

The weather was nearly perfect, with only a few drops of light rain at the beginning to remind the runners that conditions can always get worse. Wore gloves first lap, but had to toss them aside halfway through. 36° at the start, low 40s at the end.

Friends from other races and a ton of Fleet Feet people were in attendance…(too many to list), some running the 25K, some the 50K Relay, and a small number the 50K. Everyone appeared to enjoy themselves, making the event one of the most enjoyable I have attended… Only thing that could have made it better was the presence of more running friends (you know who you are)!

As always, the staff and volunteers putting on the race were phenomenal. From check-in to finish line, there were just the right number of people around to ask questions and keep runner’s motivated. Kudos to the Twin City Track Club for hosting the event!
